Thai Driving Licence for Foreigners

IDP rules, converting your licence, documents, tests and renewals — the practical path for expats.

Short answer

Short visits: drive on your home licence plus a valid International Driving Permit. Living here: apply for a Thai licence at your provincial Department of Land Transport office with your passport, visa/extension, proof of address, and a Thai medical certificate. Holding a valid foreign licence usually waives the practical test. You get a two-year licence first, then five-year renewals.

Documents checklist

  • ✓Passport (original + copies of photo page and current visa/extension stamp)
  • ✓Certificate of residence from Immigration, an embassy letter, or a valid work permit
  • ✓Medical certificate issued recently by a Thai clinic or hospital
  • ✓Existing foreign driving licence and/or International Driving Permit, if converting
  • ✓Road-safety course certificate (e-learning or in-office) for first-time applicants

Common expat mistakes

Renting a scooter with no licence

Police checkpoints fine unlicensed riders, and travel insurance routinely voids medical cover for accidents while riding unlicensed.

Assuming the IDP is optional

Your home licence alone is not valid in Thailand. Get the IDP before you fly — it cannot be issued inside Thailand.

Old medical certificate

Offices reject certificates older than the accepted window. Get it the same week as your appointment.

Wrong category

Car and motorcycle licences are separate. Apply for both if you ride and drive.

FAQ

Can I drive in Thailand with my home country licence?

Only together with a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 or 1968 road traffic conventions, and only for short visits. A domestic licence alone is not accepted by Thai police, and most insurers will deny a claim if you were driving without a licence valid in Thailand.

How long can I use an International Driving Permit?

An IDP is valid for up to one year from issue, or until your home licence expires — whichever comes first. If you live in Thailand long term, apply for a Thai licence instead of renewing IDPs.

Which documents do I need at the Department of Land Transport?

Passport with a valid visa or extension, a certificate of residence (from Immigration or your embassy) or a work permit, a recent medical certificate from a Thai clinic, and your foreign licence plus IDP if you are converting.

Do I have to take a driving test?

If you hold a valid foreign licence (or IDP) for the same vehicle category, the practical driving test is normally waived; you still take the colour-blindness, reaction and depth-perception checks plus the theory session. Without a foreign licence you take the full theory and practical tests.

What is the e-learning requirement?

First-time applicants must complete the Department of Land Transport's road-safety course — either online (e-learning, certificate valid a limited period) or in person at the office — before the tests. Bring the printed certificate.

How long is a Thai driving licence valid?

Your first licence is a temporary two-year licence. After that it can be renewed as a five-year licence, and renewed again every five years with a fresh medical certificate.

Do I need separate licences for a car and a motorbike?

Yes. Car (private) and motorcycle licences are separate documents with separate fees; riding a scooter on a car-only licence is treated as riding unlicensed.

Is a Thai licence useful beyond driving?

Yes — it is widely accepted as photo ID and often qualifies you for Thai-resident pricing at national parks and some attractions.
